By definition, a switch is an electrical component that can break an electrical circuit, interrupting the current of diverting it from one conductor to another. There are several types of switches used commonly in workplaces, often used to control lighting but also for other applications.

While locking out these switches is not the preferred method of isolating electrical energy (compared to locking out Circuit Breakers for example), there are applications where these Lockout Devices are necessary to work safely and comply with OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.147.
