By definition, Circuit Breakers are automatically-operated electrical switches that are specifically designed to protect electrical circuits from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Although the basic function of a circuit breaker is to detect a fault condition and automatically open the circuit, it is often used as a manual energy-isolation device by manually placing it in the OFF position.
When a circuit breaker is subject to Lockout/Tagout, a Circuit Breaker Lockout Device is required for compliance with OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.147 standard.
