Stored Thermal Energy

Dissipate Thermal

Even after complete lockout, heated components may act as a stored energy that needs to be addressed. Such potential could result in personnel being exposed to dangerous thermal conditions.

Note that similar conditions may exist for freezing conditions. In these cases, exposing skin to the extreme cold would result in serious skin damage. Similar to heat situations, a recommended time is usually posted. This waiting time will allow the material to reach a safe, ambient temperature.

To ensure safe conditions for maintenance, this heat must be dissipated in the safe manner as defined by the plant. Typically this requires a waiting period until the desired working temperature is reached.

Proper lockout/tagout can virtually eliminate the risk involved with hazardous energy.
