Dissipate Rotation

Even after complete lockout, a rotating or spinning device has stored energy that needs to be addressed. Examples include the following:

• Fan blades that continue to rotate after the motor is deenergized
• Tooling that remains spinning after the driving unit is deenergized

To ensure safe conditions for maintenance, this rotational energy must be allowed to come to a complete stop before servicing. In some applications a brake may be used to control rotation.

Proper lockout/tagout can virtually eliminate the risk involved with hazardous energy.
